SLAM DUNK FESTIVAL ’18 SURVIVAL GUIDE

The bank holiday weekend festival is set to launch once again in less than three days, hitting the North (LEEDS) on Saturday, South (HATFIELD) on Sunday and Midlands (BIRMINGHAM) on Monday. With the festival running from 1pm-11pm (With afterparties till 3am), these are the things you should keep in mind before and during the festival

Set up a schedule and check out new bands.

50+ bands across 7 stages, there WILL be clashes. Be sure to set a schedule of the times and bands you wish to see. This can easily be done via the Slam Dunk Festival App. Also, don’t be afraid to check out bands you’ve never seen before. If you have free time, why not go to the Breakout Stage to check out some of the latest upcoming bands? Festivals are an easy way to discover new music quickly and easily, so make use of it if you can!

TIP: For bigger bands, give plenty of time to get to the stage before the act starts. Often, if a stage reaches full capacity there will be queues to get in, meaning you may not be let in when the band starts.

Only bring the essentials.

Security on all three venues this year is tight, meaning only one strap bags no bigger than an A4 sheet of paper are permitted into the venue. As this rule excludes backpacks, ensure to bring only the essential items for the day: Suncream, portable charger, money, ID and other essentials you may need for the day.

TIP: If you’re going to buy merch (honestly, who doesn’t) fold up a small cloth tote bag into your regular bag for later in the day

Bring enough money.

While some bars do take card payments, many merch stands and food stalls may only take cash. There are cash machines, however these often have long queues to save time, try and bring cash with you beforehand. Be sure to take enough money to suffice for the day and for travel to and from the festival grounds.

TIP: Bring coins along for quick drinks at the vending machines (venue dependant)

Keep hydrated.

Yes, water or drinks may be a bit more expensive at the festival itself, but it’s important to keep hydrated through the festival to avoid dehydration and other illness. Festivals aren’t as much fun in the medical tents. Also, food is expensive, eat before entering the festival to cut down on hunger in the grounds. Food does accommodate for vegans and non-vegans and while you can leave the festival, food areas outside the grounds (Specifically referring to MIDLANDS) may be just as expensive as inside.

TIP: If you’re desperate for water, some of the inside bars may give you glasses of tap water for free. However, this will vary from venue to venue.

Know your travel arrangements.

Over the bank holiday weekend, there are a few travel disruptions across the three dates which you can find below.

NORTH: Industrial action planned with a strike by Northern Rail train drivers. This will affect some lines in the Yorkshire Region

SOUTH: There will be limited trains leaving Hatfield station after the main festival ends (11pm) so ensure to leave promptly to fill the earlier trains. A queueing system will also be in place to avoid any overcrowding.

MIDLANDS: There will be no train service between Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street. Services between the two will be replaced by a bus service.

TIP: Plan your travel arrangements beforehand and make sure you have a backup in case you miss trains.

Maps for all three dates can also be found below:

BREAKDOWN OF SLAM DUNK’S ROCKSOUND BREAKOUT STAGE

Every year, Slam Dunk creates a stage lineup full of new bands, this year being sponsored by Rocksound. Want to learn a little more about the breakout bands taking this year’s stage? Read below!

CHAPEL

Coming over from the US are Chapel, a unlikely synth-pop/rock duo formed of ex metal band members guitarist/vocalist Carter Hardin (Nightmares) and drummer Kortney Grinwis (Favourite Weapon). With a debut EP already released, Chapel’s catchy synth infused tunes captured the attention of British audiences after their slot supporting Waterparks during September 2017. Make sure check out our upcoming post HERE and catch them at Slam Dunk this year!

DREAM STATE

Dream State are a 5-piece post-hardcore band hailing from South Wales, UK, and one of our predicted upcoming bands of 2018. With rising popularity from their 2017 single ‘White Lies’, the band have gone on to release a new single, ‘In This Hell’, and travel on a headline tour across the UK. Like female fronted post-hardcore? Dream State are ones to watch. Check out our interview HERE and our upcoming write up HERE!

GRAYSCALE

Philadelphia pop-punk 5-piece Grayscale are no strangers to music, receiving instant attention from their latest album ‘Adornment’ and appearing on ‘Punk Goes Pop Vol 7’ with their interesting cover of Justin Biebers ‘Love Yourself’. Touring alongside the likes of Slam Dunk returning pop-punk act As It Is, Grayscale are most likely going to create quite a buzz around the UK. Make sure to check them out!

HOLDING ABSENCE

Holding Absence are not your average post-hardcore band. Most probably know Holding Absence through their split EP with UK heavy metal act Loathe earlier this year. Being around for little over 6 months, Holding Absence are quickly gaining popularity and will only get bigger as the year progresses. Want to see them on a small intimate stage? Check them out this May!

MILESTONES

Forming in late 2014, Milestones are the reminiscent 2006 era pop-punk band slowly saturating the UK rock scene. With their debut EP ‘Equal Measures’ boosting them onto tours across America with the likes of Mayday Parade and touring their home country of the UK consistently, they not have an album ‘Red Lights’ and are prepared to show just what they’re here to do. Make sure to read our interview HERE and check out our upcoming post on Milestones HERE!

PALAYE ROYALE

Rising in popularity over the last 6 months, art-rock risers Palaye Royale are making their Breakout Stage headline exclusive this May. Making waves with their album ‘Boom Boom Room Side A’, Palaye Royal already have a plethora of fans across the UK ready to push them even further into the scene over the next few months.

SLEEP ON IT

Pop-punk is a genre sweeping the majority of the breakout stage for a good reason. There are some good pop-punk bands bringing back the genre to its old potential. ‘Overexposed’ album release has increased the Illinois bands discography, and with three other EP’s to hand, Sleep On It are a band that may just creep up unexpectedly into your playlists soon.

STAND ATLANTIC

Coming all the way from Australia are female fronted rock band Stand Atlantic. After their popularity increased with the release of ‘Sidewinder’, the band have had the chance to tour across the UK and Europe before making their Slam Dunk debut this May. Make sure to check out our interview HERE and our upcoming postHERE!

THE FAIM

The Faim are possibly the newest band to be on the lineup this year. Releasing their DEBUT ‘Saints Of The Sinners’ (co-written with Pete Wentz) in February and not even making their live debut till April with Lower Than Atlantis, such a quick breakout is one you should keep your eye on.Make sure to check them out on the Breakout Stage in May!

GIG REVIEW – SET IT OFF – SLAM DUNK MIDLANDS 27/05/17

IMG_3235.JPG

As the festival reaches its  final hours, the Key Club stage hosts its second to last band Set It Off. After being second on the Main Stage back in 2015, they may have downgraded stage size, but certainly upped in audience size.

Opening with single ‘Why Worry’, the entire audience was up and jumping  shouting out the lyrics ‘Why? Please tell me why do we worry?’. Opening the show with their most well-known songs certainly hyped the audience, with people singing along to the summer anthem ‘Forever Stuck In Our Youth’ and anger filled ‘The Haunting’.
